Colorado Dispensary SEO and Compliant Advertising
What It Takes to Grow a Colorado Dispensary More Than a Decade Into Legal Sales
Your Colorado dispensary is selling into a market that peaked five years ago, and how many rivals you face depends a lot on where your locations are. Sales hit about $2.2 billion in 2021, by Department of Revenue figures, and had fallen to $1.32 billion by 2025.
Colorado has been selling adult-use cannabis since 2014. The state's Marijuana Enforcement Division still lists 644 retail and 268 medical store licenses as of October 2026, with many locations holding one of each.
For a dispensary in that market, I'd start by checking how easy each location is to find and trust online. ColaDigital works on that for Colorado operators: your Google Maps listings, each dispensary's hours and menu, and what AI tools pick up, all inside Colorado's ad rules and any stricter city ones.
"Worked with Vee for almost two years and found him extremely accessible and always available. He took the time to explain not only what was being done, but why." Alex Salaman, Labstat
Colorado Listing Benchmark
Send your website and the Colorado towns you operate in. Vee benchmarks where each of your locations shows on Google Maps against nearby licensed dispensaries, reads through some of your recent Colorado ads and posts for anything the rules bar, and replies by email with the fixes he'd prioritize, normally in two business days.
There's no fee. Nothing you send is passed on, and no pitch follows.

Colorado's Cannabis Market and Ad Rules by the Numbers
- Sales: $1.32 billion in 2025, $1.18 billion of it retail, and $741.0 million from January to July 2026 (Department of Revenue)
- Licenses: 644 retail and 268 medical store licenses on the state's October 1, 2026 list, many sharing an address
- Patients: 52,617 active medical registrations in March 2026, a third of them in El Paso County
- Audience: a 71.6% adults-21-and-over threshold for TV, radio, print and online ads, the same for medical and retail businesses
- Penalties: misleading ads or ads targeting minors are a Level I violation, the state's most serious category
Colorado's Adult-Audience Rule Covers Medical Dispensaries Too
You can advertise on TV, radio, in print or online "only where at least 71.6 percent of the audience is reasonably expected to be at least the age of 21." The medical half of that rule trips people up. Medical patients can buy at 18, and some older guides, including Denver's own city page, still describe an 18+ audience test for medical ads. The current state rule says 21 for both.
So if your medical dispensary runs social or search ads aimed at an 18-to-20 audience, I'd stop those first. A quick way to check: open the audience settings on your last two or three paid campaigns and look at the minimum age. Anything under 21 is worth changing before you spend another dollar on it.

Colorado's Dispensary Advertising Rules, Topic by Topic
These come from the state's marijuana rules as they took effect on January 5, 2026, read on the Secretary of State's site.
| Rule | What it requires of you |
|---|---|
| Honest claims | Nothing deceptive, false or misleading in your ads, on your products, on signs or in documents handed to patients or consumers |
| Concentrate notice | Your concentrate ads carry the state's notice on the risks of overconsumption |
| Audience | Your TV, radio, print and internet ads need a 71.6% share of adults 21 and over in the expected audience |
| Safety claims | You can't say your products are safe because the state regulates them or a lab tested them |
| Outdoor signs | You can use them under state law and local sign rules, but not within 500 feet of schools, places of worship or public playgrounds |
| Youth appeal | No content that specifically targets anyone under 21, cartoon characters included, and no branding used to target them |
| Phones and pop-ups | Location-triggered phone marketing is limited to apps that adult owners (21+) installed themselves, with a permanent opt-out; unsolicited pop-ups are out |
| Events | You can sponsor events, but your advertising at or around the event needs reliable evidence of a 71.6% adult audience |
| Penalties | A Level I violation can bring your license suspension, fines per violation, up to $100,000 in place of a suspension, or revocation |

Denver Adds Its Own Advertising Ban
If you're in Denver, local sign and ad ordinances apply on top of the state rules, and the city's are much tighter. The city's marijuana rules page says its municipal code bars "advertising that is visible to members of the public from any street, sidewalk, park or other public place," along with billboards, signs on vehicles, handheld signs and handbills. Where state and city rules differ, the stricter one applies.
The city does allow a fixed sign on the dispensary's own lot, ads in general-circulation periodicals, incidental signage for a charitable sponsorship (never a billboard) and branded merchandise. With 176 retail licenses in the city and no billboards allowed, I'd put a Denver dispensary's effort into search, Maps and its own website. We read the city's summary page; the code section itself wasn't available to us, so check a specific ad or sign with your attorney.
Concentrate Ads Carry Their Own Notice
Since January 1, 2022, the state has required your concentrate ads to include its notice on overconsumption risks. Its industry bulletin points to four warning statements from its educational resource: concentrate use may lead to psychotic symptoms or disorder, mental health symptoms or problems, cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, and cannabis use disorder or dependence.
This one is easy to miss on your menu banner or a social graphic promoting a dab deal. I'd pull every concentrate promotion from the past month and confirm the notice is on each one, in the wording the state publishes.
Colorado Cannabis Sales Have Settled Below the Peak
Your market has settled. The Department of Revenue reported $1.32 billion in sales for 2025, of which $133.4 million was medical. The first seven months of 2026 brought $741.0 million, with monthly totals between $97.7 million in February and $111.2 million in July. Medical's share keeps slipping, from about 10% of 2025 sales to about 8.7% so far in 2026.
With so many licensed dispensaries across Colorado, I'd start by checking which competitors actually show up near each of your locations. Then I'd keep each location's hours, menu, deals and reviews current on your website and on the listings under your control.
Colorado Springs Since Retail Sales Started
Colorado Springs voters approved retail sales in November 2024, and the first retail licenses took effect in April 2025, according to The Gazette. The state's October 1, 2026 list now shows 58 retail and 84 medical store licenses in the city, and El Paso County holds 17,528 of the state's 52,617 medical patients.
Long-standing medical dispensaries now compete for adult-use shoppers too, and the city's council has capped licensed addresses at 125, per the same report. If you run a Springs dispensary that built its online presence around patients, I'd look at whether your listings, categories and website describe the adult-use side clearly as well.
Colorado Towns and Regions With the Most Dispensaries
The state's licensed facilities list counts retail store licenses in 108 postal cities. These are the main clusters, and the right-hand column shows our first check for you in each.
| Region | Retail and medical licenses | What we'd look at |
|---|---|---|
| Denver metro | Denver 176 retail and 82 medical; Aurora 24 retail; Lakewood 10 retail and 6 medical; Commerce City and Northglenn 7 retail each | A crowded field under Denver's outdoor ban; being easy to find on Google Maps gets our attention first |
| Colorado Springs and Pueblo | Colorado Springs 58 retail and 84 medical; Pueblo 21 and 4; Pueblo West 13 and 4 | Medical-heavy markets adding adult-use shoppers, where your listings should speak to both |
| Northern Front Range | Boulder 21 retail and 7 medical; Fort Collins 13 and 13; Longmont 9 and 4 | College towns with several dispensaries close together, where your current hours and menus are the first things to verify |
| Mountain and resort towns | Aspen 5, Crested Butte 5, Breckenridge 4, Telluride 4, Steamboat Springs 3 retail | Visitors searching from lodging and trailheads; Vail and Estes Park have no retail licenses, which matters if yours is the closest dispensary to either |
| Southern and Western Slope | Trinidad 14, Durango 14, Grand Junction 10, Cortez 7 retail | Border and regional hubs where each of your listings serves a wide area |

Dispensary and Medical Results From Our Case Studies
Colorado hasn't produced a ColaDigital client yet. Below you'll find figures from our documented work for Texas and Canadian dispensaries and a Texas medical clinic, each tied to its time frame. Use them to judge our approach; any Colorado result would hinge on where you're located and who competes around you.
"Vee provides awesome SEO work!"
Phon Malone, Hello High, a South Jersey dispensary"After roughly 5 months of working with ColaDigital, we can confidently say that we made the right choice and we have seen more traffic to the site and more leads coming in."
Don Henke, Sales Manager, MMI AgricultureIf your Colorado dispensary serves medical patients, our work with Texas 420 Doctors is worth a look. It's a different type of business, but the campaign shows how we've handled advertising for people seeking medical cannabis. Texas 420 Doctors assesses Texas medical cannabis patients by video call. The last tile's 1,580 leads trace back to a four-month run of Google search and Meta advertising we managed for the clinic, without a single disapproval. A developer built the replacement website the clinic launched in August 2026, and the SEO for that switch was ours. A Colorado medical campaign would need the same 71.6% adult audience as a retail one, so it couldn't aim at 18-to-20-year-old patients.

Check Where Your Colorado Dispensaries Stand
Give me a list of your locations, plus the competitors you keep an eye on. I'll see how each location appears on the map and in the Google results below it, check your recent ads for the audience settings and the concentrate notice, and send back three changes, most important first.

How Colorado Shoppers Use AI to Pick a Dispensary
A skier in Breckenridge might ask ChatGPT which dispensary in town opens before the lifts do. Someone in Fort Collins might ask Gemini where to find a particular brand of gummies near campus. Each assistant may draw its answer from places it can find and compare, such as your Google listing, your website, the menu platform you use and directory sites. If your hours or deals differ between those sources, or your age gate hides your address, I'd fix that before assuming an assistant will describe you correctly. We keep those details matched across your website and any listing we're able to edit, so Google reads the same hours, address and menu a customer sees.
Which dispensary an assistant suggests isn't something we, or anyone, can dictate. What we can control is the accuracy of your own website and the profiles we manage.
How We Work With a Colorado Dispensary
Fix Ad Audiences, Notices and Listings
We check current campaigns for under-21 targeting, add the concentrate notice where it's missing, confirm Denver ads and signs against the city rules, and correct your Google listing details.
Build Search Around Each Town You Serve
Shoppers in each town you serve should land on the right location with its hours, deals, menu and directions in one place.
Bring In Paid Media Once the 71.6% Evidence Is There
Your paid ads start once the audience evidence reaches 71.6%, and your monthly report covers each location's Maps activity, site visits and direction requests.
Colorado Cannabis Marketing Fees (USD)
Colorado work is billed monthly, beginning at $2,000. Groups with several locations, or anyone who keeps paid media live all year, can go above $10,000. The final figure reflects your dispensary count, local competition and the amount of fixing your listings, site and ads need first. Invoices go out in USD, with CAD for anyone based in Canada, and media spend is never folded into our fee.

Get Colorado Dispensary Marketing HelpColorado Dispensaries and Brands We Help
Colorado retail and medical dispensaries, multi-location groups, and the growers and manufacturers behind them are who we work with best, provided you want growth from search that you can actually measure, all inside the state's ad rules. A plan built on Denver billboards, ads aimed at 18-to-20-year-old patients or "lab-tested so it's safe" messaging won't survive those rules, and I'll say that up front. Suppliers to licensees, labs included, will get more from our B2B case study.
