Dispensary SEO and Marketing in Ontario

Ontario Dispensary SEO While Shop Counts Shift Region by Region

Ontario finished 2025 with 1,780 authorized cannabis dispensaries, 60 more than a year earlier. Toronto was the only region where the count fell. Store counts rose in the other four Ontario regions, but I'd still look at the licensed dispensaries near your particular address before deciding how much competition has changed. The average wholesale price of dried flower also fell to $3.75 a gram in 2025, although that figure alone says nothing about your own margins.

My first look is at how Google presents your dispensary, whether shoppers can reach your menu and what nearby competitors are showing them. Then I'd review your marketing against the AGCO standards, so you know which changes I'd recommend and why.

How Each Ontario Region Changed in 2025

The Ontario Cannabis Store splits the province into five regions, and they moved in different directions last year.

That Greater Toronto Area point deserves a closer look if you're near the edge of a town that hasn't allowed stores. Reports from early 2024 listed Vaughan, Markham, Oakville and Richmond Hill among the holdouts. I haven't confirmed where each stands today, so check your neighboring council's current position before you plan around it. If shoppers are crossing a town line to reach you, my bet is your listing should say plainly how close you are to that border.

Winning the Google Maps Results Around Your Dispensary

In my experience, a lot of the choosing happens in the map. A shopper sees three dispensaries, compares stars, checks who's open and taps one. Your website matters after that tap. Here's what I look at first.

  • Your listing name matches the name on your storefront and your AGCO authorization, with nothing extra added to it
  • The hours Google shows match what you actually run, which matters more since stores could open at 7 a.m. from May 1, 2026
  • Delivery and curbside hours are listed separately, because a 7 o'clock opening doesn't apply to delivery
  • Your categories, photos and review replies show someone's still paying attention
  • The menu link goes to your real menu, not a homepage with an age gate and nothing behind it

One check you can run right now: open Google Maps on your phone at 7:30 in the morning from a block away and search "dispensary". If you open at 7 and Google says you're closed, you've just found your first fix.

AGCO Standard 5.2 expects reasonable steps to confirm that people using your site or app are 19 or older. Our age checks ask that question without keeping Google from reading your address, opening times and menu.

Words That Can Get an Ontario Dispensary Flagged

On August 12, 2026 the AGCO reminded retailers that advertising can't link cannabis to medicine or health. The reminder named "wellness," "well-being" and "care" as words that can breach the standard depending on context, and it covers far more than ads: your branding, signs, website, app, social posts, influencer content, emails and co-branding all count. The AGCO judges the overall impression.

The part I'd underline twice: you're responsible even when an agency wrote it. That includes us. So every page title, Google post and product description we write for you gets read against the AGCO standards before it goes live, and I'll tell you when a line you like is one I wouldn't publish.

"Dispensary" itself is a different story. StratCann reported in March 2026 that the AGCO dropped an earlier push to remove the word from retailers' websites and metadata, saying the term alone doesn't imply medical advice. I haven't seen that memo myself, so if the word is in your legal name, ask your lawyer to confirm. On your site and listing, it's the word shoppers type, and I'd keep it.

Two more Ontario rules shape your marketing budget. You can't give away cannabis or accessories, and licensed producers can't pay you for shelf space, marketing or co-branded ads. Our Ontario advertising laws guide covers every standard in detail. To see how Ontario compares with the rest of the country, read our province-by-province rules guide.

What Happened for an Ontario Dispensary Group

These figures come from our published case study for one Ontario company running five dispensaries, kept anonymous. The work started late in October 2025, and the study compares about six months of Google Search Console data. It doesn't tell you what your dispensary will see.

What I took from it: Hamilton and Midland are nothing alike. One location sits in a crowded city, the other in a small town on Georgian Bay. Clicks rose in both, and in St. Catharines (up 33.8%) and Welland (up 24.6%) too, but each one needed its own listing work against its own rivals. I can't point to a single change that explains the gains, and the case study doesn't try.

Find Out How Your Dispensary Shows Up in Your Town

Send your website, and I'll pick out the dispensaries you're most likely competing with. I'll search for your location the way a local would, on Maps and in regular results, look at your age gate and menu on a phone, and email back the three fixes that should come first for your location.

  • Where you rank against your closest rivals
  • Hours, delivery and curbside on your listing
  • Any wording I'd expect the AGCO to question

There's no charge, and Vee replies himself inside two working days.

Ontario Cannabis Marketing Services

  • Dispensary SEO: helping each Ontario dispensary show up for searches in its own town, with a menu shoppers can reach in one tap
  • Google Business Profiles and reviews: listing names, hours, delivery details and review replies kept accurate at every location
  • Cannabis SEO for groups: category and brand pages when you run several Ontario locations under one site
  • Google Search ads: pilot campaigns for authorized retailers, written to the AGCO standards
  • Email and text: messages to customers who agreed to hear from you, sent under Canada's anti-spam law

Competing With Illegal Online Sellers

On October 19, 2026 the province said it plans to give the AGCO powers to inspect, seize and fine illegal storefronts and online sellers. There's no bill yet. The province estimates illegal sellers still hold about 30% of the market, though it hasn't said how it got that number.

You can't outspend them on discounts, and you shouldn't try. Your licensed dispensary can give shoppers clear information about its address, hours, legal delivery options and regulated products. I'd check that those details are accurate on your website and Google listing, then correct what we can control.

How We Start With an Ontario Dispensary

  1. First: Your Listings and Your Neighbors

We pull every Google listing you have and compare it with the dispensaries closest to each one.

  2. Next: Hours, Menu and Wording

We fix the hours, menu links and any lines the AGCO might read as health claims.

  3. Then: Search Ads if the Pilot Suits You

For authorized retailers who want to test, we run small Google Search campaigns before December 31.

  4. Every Month: Numbers by Location

Each dispensary gets its own report covering Maps rank, clicks from Google and direction requests from the listing. A strong Hamilton month won't mask a slow Welland one.

What Ontario Dispensary Marketing Costs

Our fees begin at US$2,000 a month. A large group, or one adding paid channels, can run above US$10,000. Ontario clients get their quote and invoices in Canadian dollars, and every service's starting price is on our pricing page. A single dispensary in Sudbury and a group with 20 Ontario locations will need different levels of work. I'd look at your locations, what shape your website and listings are in, your nearby competitors and the services you want before putting together a quote. Ad spend is paid to Google directly, and you aren't tied into a long contract, since one month's notice ends the work.

Ontario Dispensary Marketing Questions

Can I Use the Word Dispensary for My Ontario Pot Shop?

On your website and Google listing, yes. StratCann reported in March 2026 that the AGCO no longer wants it removed from websites and metadata. If it's part of your registered name, confirm with your lawyer.

Which Words Does the AGCO Treat as Health Claims?

Its August 2026 reminder named "wellness," "well-being" and "care" as words that can breach the standard depending on how they're used. Anything suggesting cannabis treats or heals a condition belongs in the same pile.

Am I Responsible for What My Agency or an Influencer Posts?

Yes. The AGCO says the retailer is responsible for advertising made on its behalf, including agency and influencer content. That's why we check our own work against the standards.

Can a Licensed Producer Pay for My Dispensary's Ads?

No. Ontario's standards stop producers from paying a retailer for marketing, shelf space or joint advertising. Training and gifts of nominal value are among the narrow exceptions.

Do I Need an Age Check Online in Ontario?

You do. Standard 5.2 asks for reasonable steps to make sure website and app users are 19 or older.

Are Points or Loyalty Programs Allowed in Ontario?

I couldn't find AGCO guidance written specifically about loyalty programs, and free cannabis or accessories are banned. Treat any points program as a question for your lawyer before you promote it.

Can Ontario Dispensaries Advertise on Google?

Authorized private retailers can apply to run Search ads under Google's Canadian pilot, which Google says ends December 31, 2026. Display and YouTube ads aren't part of it.

How Much Does ColaDigital Charge an Ontario Dispensary?

Pricing begins at US$2,000 monthly, with the quote and invoices in Canadian dollars. Groups with many locations can go above US$10,000, and Google bills ad spend separately.
