Boston's Cannabis Study Found 35 Active Retail Licenses and Recommended Reviewing New Applications Case by Case
The city commissioned that study, and the Boston Cannabis Board accepted it in March 2026. City staff told the authors that 61 retail licenses were somewhere in the approval process as of November 2025, with 35 of them active. The study's advice was to limit new licenses in Boston zip codes and look at each new request on its merits. Weeks later the board approved a multistate operator's downtown dispensary, with a buffer conflict flagged in the minutes and an equity wholesale program attached as a condition.
So Boston isn't closed to new competition, and it isn't wide open either. Boston dispensaries, equity licensees, delivery operators and cannabis brands come to us for local search, Google Maps and AI answer work. We're remote and keep no Boston office. When I look at a Boston dispensary, I start with hours: what "open now" shows on a phone in Allston or Dorchester at 10 p.m., and whether it matches the hours your license actually allows.

Boston Cannabis Board Licensing, Step by Step
| Step or rule | What the Boston Cannabis Board's rules and records say |
|---|---|
| Hearings | An application hearing on a Wednesday, then a voting hearing the following week |
| Neighborhood input | A community meeting, and a letter from the district city councilor (no reply in 45 days counts as non-opposition) |
| Equity ratio | The city keeps at least as many equity licensees as non-equity ones; applications that would tip the balance wait |
| Spacing | Half a mile (2,640 feet) from any existing cannabis establishment under the zoning code, unless the Zoning Board of Appeal grants a variance |
| Hours and changes | Set license by license; new hours, delivery or floor-plan changes go back to the board |
From the Boston Cannabis Board Rules and Regulations (adopted July 2020, updated July 2021), the board's page and its 2026 agendas and voting minutes, checked October 28, 2026. The current City Code chapter 8-13 wasn't part of what we read, so check whether the rules have been amended since 2021.
The last row is the one with marketing consequences. Because hours are tied to your license, your Google hours, website and menu listings should change once the board's approval of a later close takes effect, and not before.
Question 8 Failed, So Adult-Use Sales Continue
Massachusetts voters rejected Question 8 on November 3, 2026, by about three to one in unofficial returns. Adult-use sales stay legal, and nothing changes for your license. Had it passed, adult-use sales would have stopped in 2028, while medical sales would have remained legal. The state still has to certify the count, though I don't expect a margin that wide to move. If you put off a longer-term project while the vote was pending, like rebuilding your site or opening a second dispensary, I wouldn't keep waiting.
The Half-Mile Rule Works Like a Gate, Not a Wall
Boston's zoning code still sets half a mile between cannabis establishments, but WBUR reported in 2024 that the Zoning Board of Appeal had repeatedly waived it, and the Planning Department's proposal to remove it from zoning has sat under review since its comment period closed in May 2024. The March 2026 downtown approval went ahead with a buffer conflict on the record.
What that means in practice: a new dispensary can still open closer to you than half a mile if it wins the variance. I'd keep an eye on the board's hearing agendas for addresses near yours, so a new neighbor doesn't come as a surprise.

Later Hours and Courier Delivery in 2026
The board's 2026 minutes show several Boston dispensaries getting later hours, including one approved to 11 p.m. daily in June, and an Allston dispensary asking in October to stay open until midnight. In June the board also let two dispensaries deliver through a licensed courier, and it approved a new equity delivery operator in Hyde Park in January, pending a buffer variance. I can't tell you what that says about shopper demand. What it does tell you is that hours and delivery details in Boston change often, so the listing needs checking every time your license does.
Boston's Local Cannabis Excise
Massachusetts lets a host community add up to 3% on adult-use sales, and Boston collects it: the city's budget shows $2,941,746 from its local marijuana excise in fiscal 2025 and $3.66 million budgeted for fiscal 2026. That's city revenue, and the timing of state distributions affects it, so I wouldn't treat it as a measure of Boston sales. Our Massachusetts page covers the state taxes and ad rules.
Social consumption is still waiting locally. The Boston Globe reported on June 30, 2026 that Boston hadn't opted in to the state's new lounge licenses, and no city vote has turned up in my searches since.
Proof From Outside Massachusetts
We don't yet have a published Boston or Massachusetts cannabis SEO case study to show you. The tiles track Ontario and Texas dispensaries, each over different months, and I'd read them as samples of the work rather than anything a Boston dispensary should expect.

Alex Salaman, Labstat"After roughly 5 months of working with ColaDigital, we can confidently say that we made the right choice and we have seen more traffic to the site and more leads coming in."
Don Henke, Sales Manager, MMI AgricultureIf your board approval added courier delivery, read the delivery tile first. If you serve patients, our Texas 420 Doctors campaign, which ran medical evaluation ads on Google and Meta, is on the case study page too.

Boston Dispensaries in AI Answers
Someone asking an AI assistant which Boston dispensary is open late in Allston may get a reply pieced together from dispensary websites, Google listings and cannabis directories. With hours changing by board vote and two Boston equity dispensaries closing in 2026, according to the Globe, an answer can easily be out of date. We make your hours, address and delivery details easy for those tools to read on your site, update the listings you control and ask other platforms to fix theirs. Hours change more often than anything else on a Boston listing, which is why I check them before the rest.

Boston Dispensary Marketing FAQs
How Many Active Retail Licenses Did Boston's Study Count?+
The city's 2026 saturation study reported 35 active retail licenses out of 61 at some stage of approval, as of November 2025. I couldn't get a newer count from the city's data.
Do Boston Dispensaries Have to Be Half a Mile Apart?+
The zoning code says so, but the Zoning Board of Appeal has granted variances, and the board approved a downtown dispensary in 2026 despite a flagged conflict.
How Does Boston's Equity Rule Work?+
The board's rules require at least as many equity licensees as non-equity ones, and an application that would upset that balance waits.
Can Boston Dispensaries Stay Open Past 10 p.m.?+
Hours are set license by license. The board approved later hours for several dispensaries in 2026, including to 11 p.m.
Can a Boston Dispensary Deliver?+
Yes, with board approval. In 2026 it allowed two dispensaries to deliver through a licensed courier and approved an equity delivery operator.
What Happened With Question 8?+
Voters turned it down on November 3, 2026, roughly three to one in the early unofficial count. It would have ended adult-use sales in 2028, so Boston's adult-use dispensaries carry on as before.
Are Cannabis Lounges Allowed in Boston?+
Not yet. The Globe reported in June 2026 that Boston hadn't opted in to the state's social consumption licenses.
How Much Does a Boston Dispensary Spend on Marketing With Us?+
Boston work starts from $2,000 monthly (USD invoices) and climbs past $10,000 for paid media or several neighborhoods. Ad spend is billed to you by the platforms, and the work stops on 30 days' notice from either side.
