What Medical Marijuana Marketing Covers

Medical marijuana marketing is the work of getting patients to find, trust and choose a medical cannabis business online, within the rules for health ads and cannabis. For a clinic, that usually means ranking for "medical card near me" searches, answering eligibility questions clearly, and running Google Search or Meta ads that the platforms will approve. For a medical dispensary, it's Maps, menus and patient-facing content. ColaDigital's SEO starts at $2,000 a month (USD), and Google Ads management starts at $1,000 a month plus ad spend.

Trusted by Cannabis Brands, Retail Operators, and Growth-Focused Teams

Every logo represents a business that trusted ColaDigital with an important part of its growth. Some engagements focused on SEO, others on advertising, consulting, technical strategy, or long-term marketing support, but every relationship started the same way: understanding the business first before recommending a solution.

What We Run for Medical Cannabis Businesses

SEO for Clinics and Medical Dispensaries

Pages that answer patients' first questions: do I qualify, how does the state registry work, what does the visit cost, where do I fill my prescription. City pages for each market you serve, condition pages written with sources, and doctor profiles that show who patients will actually see.

$2,000 to $10,000+ a month, scaled to your markets and locations

Cannabis SEO

AI Search Visibility

Patients now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers which clinic to use. We check which clinics those answers name in your state, then shape your pages and listings so yours can be one of them.

Google Search Ads

Card clinics and telehealth services can usually run search ads when the ad sells the evaluation, not cannabis. That's what our Texas 420 Doctors and Green Team Doctors campaigns ran on.

From $1,000 a month plus ad spend.

Google Ads management

Meta Ads

Texas 420 Doctors got 733 leads from Meta at about $13 apiece. Meta reviews health and cannabis ads closely, so we check every ad and landing page before it goes in.

From $2,000 a month plus ad spend.

Meta Ads management

Prices are in USD. For Canadian clients, we'll provide a quote in CAD. Full details are on the pricing page.

What We Check Before Any Ad or Page Goes Live

Medical pages carry more risk than most. A wrong line about who qualifies sends a patient to an appointment that goes nowhere, and they won't trust you again. Every page and ad we write for a medical client gets these checks:

  • The state program rules are current and link to the state source
  • No promises that cannabis treats or cures a condition
  • Clear wording on who qualifies, who doesn't and what the state charges
  • Ads sell the evaluation, the service or the brand, never a THC product
  • Each landing page matches its ad and carries an age gate if your state asks for one
  • Patient details never go into a shared report

Renewals and Returning Patients

A medical card doesn't last forever, and a patient coming back to renew already knows you. When Green Team Doctors, a medical card clinic, handed us its Google Ads in 2023, we split the searches three ways: people reading up on cards, people applying for the first time and people renewing. Each group got ads written for where that patient was.

  1. 1Reading Up on Cards
  2. 2Applying the First Time
  3. 3Coming Back to Renew

I'd also check whether your renewal page tells patients what to bring, how long the appointment takes and whether they need another evaluation. Those are practical questions worth answering before someone has to call your clinic.

Reviews and Your Google Listing

Plenty of patients look at your Google rating before they pick a clinic for their evaluation. For a clinic, the listing has to show:

  • The right category
  • Real hours
  • The states you certify in
  • Whether visits are online or in person

I read the reviews too, especially the ones nobody answered. A short reply from the clinic, written without mentioning anyone's condition, tells the next patient that somebody's paying attention.

Patient Education Without Medical Claims

Patients want to know if their condition qualifies, what the visit's like and what happens after approval. You can answer all of that without saying cannabis treats anything.

For Texas 420 Doctors, which certifies patients across Texas by telehealth, we wrote twelve condition pages and eight guides for patients further along, each tied to the state rule behind it with a link the patient can check. It's also the kind of page an AI answer can quote, because it's specific and sourced.

What I've Learned Running Clinic Ads

Check the landing page before you raise a budget. In October 2025, Green Team Doctors' campaign sat paused for two weeks while we sorted out a page problem. Each conversion that month cost $34.37, and November came in close to $20 again.

Green Team Doctors: Cost per Conversion by Month
Sep 2025$20.42
Oct 2025$34.37
Nov 2025$20.80
Dec 2025$22.90
Jan 2026$21.88
Dashed line: our $30 target. From our monthly reports to the clinic. October's ads ran only in the second half of the month.

Green Team's campaign slowed after December 23, 2025, so we reduced the ad budget for the final week rather than keep spending at the same rate.

I keep ads and SEO on their own lines in every report. Texas 420 Doctors' ads brought in 1,580 leads. Their organic visits rose in July 2026 too, but I didn't put a lead number on the SEO work, because the clinic was still confirming what counted as a conversion.

What DEA Registration Changes for Medical Operators

The DEA's first federal registrations, announced by the Justice Department on October 30, 2026, went to more than 900 medical dispensaries across Texas, Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, South Dakota and West Virginia. The DEA says it will keep registering in phases, and manufacturer and distributor applications haven't been decided yet.

Here's what that means for your marketing, and what it doesn't:

  • Once registered, medical operators might get to write off marketing as an ordinary business cost, because state-licensed medical marijuana is now in Schedule III. Check with your tax adviser first
  • Google and Meta haven't changed their cannabis ad policies. You still can't advertise THC products on either one
  • More competitors with marketing budgets are coming. A clinic or medical dispensary that already owns its Google searches will be harder to catch

I've written up what DEA registration means for your marketing in more detail.

Who This Is For

A Good Fit

  • Medical card clinics and evaluation services
  • Telehealth doctors certifying patients in one state or several
  • Medical dispensaries, including newly DEA-registered ones in the first seven states
  • Multi-state card services that need patients finding them in every market they serve

Probably Not a Fit If

  • You want a promise of a set number of patients
  • You want ads that sell THC products
  • You sell adult-use cannabis only, so dispensary marketing is the better fit

Who Runs Your Medical Account

Vee Popat, founder of ColaDigital

Vee Popat plans and checks every medical account himself. His search work goes back to 2004, and his cannabis work to 2017, for dispensaries, card clinics and telehealth doctors in the US and Canada.

Before any ad or page goes live, he reads it against the state program rules and the platform's ad policy. Read more about Vee

Medical Marijuana Marketing by State

Every state writes its own rules for what a clinic or dispensing organization can advertise. If you operate in one of these states, its page sets out those rules and how we market inside them.

Medical Marijuana Marketing FAQs

Can a medical marijuana clinic advertise on Google?

In most cases, yes, when the ad promotes the medical evaluation or the clinic itself rather than cannabis products. Texas 420 Doctors and Green Team Doctors both ran Google Search campaigns with us. What Google won't take in the US is an ad selling THC products.

Did the DEA registrations change Google or Meta ad rules?

No. The registrations and the move to Schedule III changed federal status for state-licensed medical marijuana. Each platform writes its own ad policy, and neither has opened up THC product ads.

How much does medical marijuana marketing cost?

Our SEO starts at $2,000 a month, Google Ads management at $1,000 and Meta at $2,000, plus your ad spend. We bill in US dollars and quote Canadian clinics in Canadian dollars.

How long does SEO take for a medical cannabis clinic?

Expect a few months before rankings settle. For Texas 420 Doctors, organic visitors in July 2026 were up 75.5% on June while the rebuilt pages went live, but every site starts from a different place.

Can you market a medical dispensary that just got DEA registration?

Yes. Search, Maps and patient content work the same way, and registration may make the marketing spend deductible. Check that with your tax adviser.

Do you write medical content about conditions?

Yes, with care. We explain the state's qualifying conditions and process with sources, and we don't claim cannabis treats anything. Your doctors can review any page before it goes live.
