A Floor of 34 and No Ceiling on Minneapolis Dispensaries
Minnesota makes every city allow at least one cannabis retail registration for each 12,500 residents. For Minneapolis that works out to at least 34 dispensaries, KSTP reported, and when the City Council passed its cannabis zoning rules 12 to 1 on October 31, 2024, it chose not to set any upper limit. The rules took effect November 9, 2024. I couldn't get a count of open Minneapolis dispensaries from the state's own records, so I won't give you one. What I can tell you is that the ordinance puts no limit on how many more can open near you.
I work with Minneapolis dispensary owners, microbusiness licensees and multi-license groups on Google search, Maps and what AI assistants say about them. ColaDigital is remote, with no Twin Cities office. The first thing I do for a Minneapolis client is simple: search "dispensary near me" on a phone from Lake Street, then again from Northeast, and see whether your listing turns up with today's hours.
"Worked with Vee for almost two years and found him extremely accessible and always available. He took the time to explain not only what was being done, but why." Alex Salaman, Labstat
Minneapolis Listing Check
Put your web address in the form. From your dispensary's block and from a suburb you choose, I'll note the dispensaries Google lists, set yours beside them and email what stood out, normally inside two business days.
Kept private. No one calls you afterward to sell anything.

The Minneapolis Cannabis Ordinance, Rule by Rule
| Rule | What the city and news reports show |
|---|---|
| Cap | None; the state floor of at least 34 still applies |
| Site size | Inside a contiguous commercial or industrial area of at least three acres (the draft had five) |
| Schools | 300 feet from a K-12 school; FOX 9 also listed childcare centers |
| Other uses | 1,000 feet from existing pawnshops, alternative financial establishments and missions, and no entrance shared with a business outside cannabis |
| Signs | No portable, temporary, backlit or freestanding signs |
| Registration | A city registration for each licensed location, renewed every year along with the state license |
| Consumption | No indoor use; the city says outdoor on-site licenses aren't available yet |
From the city's cannabis ordinance page (updated July 23, 2026), its registration and business-rules pages (September 3, 2026) and KSTP and FOX 9 coverage of the October 31, 2024 vote, checked October 28, 2026. The adopted zoning text didn't open for us, so ask the city to confirm distances at your site.
One thing the reports don't settle is spacing between dispensaries. KSTP wrote that a council amendment removed a planned 300-foot buffer between them, while FOX 9 described the spacing as eased. Until I've read the adopted zoning text myself, I wouldn't assume a rival can't open next door.
Backlit and Freestanding Signs Aren't Allowed in Minneapolis
On top of Minnesota's two-sign limit, which our Minnesota page explains, the city's 2024 ordinance bars cannabis businesses from portable, temporary, backlit and freestanding signs, FOX 9 reported. So there's no lit cabinet sign over the door and no sandwich board out on the sidewalk.
That puts more weight on your Google listing, especially after dark. I'd check three things on it: a daytime photo of the entrance so people recognize the building, a parking or transit note, and hours that agree with the ones on your door.
Hemp Edibles, Bars and the City Registration
Minneapolis requires every lower-potency hemp edible retailer to register with the city as well as hold the new state license, and the city's hemp guide says that applies even to shops that were already selling them. Bars and breweries pouring hemp drinks on site need a separate state endorsement. The city says it focuses on product compliance and age verification, and state law calls for at least one compliance check a year on every registered location.
Age checks are where Twin Cities sellers have slipped. A University of Minnesota study, reported by MinnPost in December 2025, made 293 purchase attempts at hemp THC sellers in Hennepin and Ramsey counties, leaving dispensaries out, and 34% sold without asking for ID. Sales were easier in Minneapolis and St. Paul than in the suburbs. Your dispensary wasn't part of it, but the yearly check covers the same ground, so I'd keep staff trained and state your ID policy plainly on your site.

Opening Hours in Minneapolis and the Suburbs Nearby
State law stops retail cannabis sales from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday, and lets cities cut further. I didn't find a Minneapolis rule going beyond that, though your registration is worth a look. Suburbs can be stricter: Eden Prairie held retail to the state minimum of five, with doors open from 10 in the morning until 9 at night, Eden Prairie Local News reported in April 2025.
If you run dispensaries in Minneapolis and a suburb, each Google listing needs its own hours. Copy one location's settings across all of them and a suburb that closes at 9 can end up listed until midnight.
Cannabis Events and On-Site Use in Minneapolis
Minnesota's first cannabis event organizer license went to a festival at Surly Festival Field in Minneapolis on September 27, 2025, Ganjapreneur reported, and the state wants documented local approval before any event goes ahead. Lounges are a different story. The city's rules page, updated September 3, 2026, says indoor use is banned under the Clean Indoor Air Act and outdoor on-site consumption licenses aren't available yet. If you're sponsoring or appearing at an event, get the city's sign-off in writing before any of it goes on your site or socials.
Unlicensed Cannabis Sellers in Minneapolis
Minnesota's cannabis office filed its first post-legalization lawsuit in November 2024, against an unlicensed seller with shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul over flower testing far above the hemp limit, FOX 9 reported. I haven't seen how that case ended. Statewide, the office's 2025 market report counted 1,910 inspections of hemp sellers through October and 12 sites selling illicit flower, with no breakdown by city.
For a licensed dispensary the practical step is making your license obvious, in your site footer, your Google description and your menu. A shopper comparing you with a smoke shop down the block should be able to tell in a second which one is licensed.
Case Study Results From Ontario and Texas Dispensaries
We haven't published a Minnesota case study yet. Each tile below covers a Texas or Ontario dispensary over its own time frame, and I wouldn't treat any of them as a Minneapolis forecast.
"After roughly 5 months of working with ColaDigital, we can confidently say that we made the right choice and we have seen more traffic to the site and more leads coming in."

Minneapolis Review
Vee Will Compare Your Minneapolis Listing With Nearby Dispensaries
Send your site over. I'll run the searches from your Minneapolis door and from a suburb, see which licensed dispensaries sit around you on the map, tap through your menu the way a shopper on the bus would, and rank three fixes for you.
- Google hours against your registration
- Entrance photos for a city without lit signs
- License details, menu wording and ID policy
Vee answers Minneapolis requests personally, most of them within two business days.
Minneapolis Dispensaries and What AI Assistants Say About Them
Someone in the Mill District who asks an AI chatbot for a nearby dispensary may get an answer assembled out of dispensary sites, Google Business listings and cannabis directories. We spell out your street address, opening hours and what you sell as plain text on your site so assistants can read it, fix the listings you control and send corrections to the directories you don't. Minneapolis and St. Paul run together in a lot of directories, so I'd name your neighborhood and the city outright, which leaves less room for an assistant to file you under St. Paul.

Not a backlit one. The 2024 ordinance also bars portable, temporary and freestanding signs, per FOX 9.

Not yet. The city says on-site consumption licenses aren't available, and indoor use is banned.
How Much Does Minneapolis Dispensary Marketing Cost?+
