Detroit's Adult-Use Dispensaries Opened About Three Years After the Rest of Michigan

The rest of Michigan began adult-use sales in December 2019. Detroit's first came on January 4, 2023, after a federal judge blocked the city's first ordinance in 2021 over its preference for long-time Detroit residents, and the council rewrote the rules. Since then the city has announced 63 adult-use retail license awards across two rounds, 33 in December 2022 and 30 in November 2023, under a cap of 100. Crain's reported that the state's March 2026 tax payout counted 61 licensed marijuana businesses in Detroit. Those are licenses, not a count of doors open today.

Detroit dispensaries, equity licensees and Michigan cannabis brands work with me on Google search, Maps placement and what AI tools say about their dispensaries. We operate remotely, without a Detroit office. In a city where a competitor can now sit 500 feet away, my opening check is plain: when someone in Midtown or near 8 Mile searches on a phone, which dispensaries come up, and is yours one of them with the right hours.

Detroit's Adult-Use Rules in One Table

RuleWhat the city's ordinance and records show
License cap100 adult-use retail licenses, 30 microbusiness and 30 consumption lounge, split between equity and non-equity applicants
Awards so far33 retail in December 2022 and 30 in November 2023, plus microbusiness and lounge approvals; no third round announced as of October 2026
HoursRetailers, microbusinesses and provisioning centers between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.; consumption lounges until 2 a.m.
SpacingCannabis businesses can be 500 feet apart since a late-2023 change (was 1,000); schools, parks, libraries and churches stay at 1,000 feet, as Metro Times reported
SitingSpecial land use approval in permitted business and industrial zones
Community obligationsA Good Neighbor Plan with an annual outreach report and at least one local hiring, purchasing or giving commitment

From the city's license announcements (December 2022 and November 2023), Ordinances 2022-11 and 2023-12, City Planning Commission slides (June 2023), a Legislative Policy Division memo on hours (May 2, 2025) and Metro Times coverage of the 2023 spacing vote, checked October 28, 2026. Neither the city's cannabis office page nor the current zoning chapter opened for us, so confirm spacing for your address with the city.

The 10 p.m. close is worth getting exactly right on your listing. Every Detroit retailer has to close by 10, so a listing that shows you open later sends a shopper to a locked door.

Detroit Limits Marijuana Ads Near Schools, Parks and Churches

In March 2025 the City Council voted unanimously to keep marijuana advertising on off-premises signs at least 1,000 feet away from schools, libraries, parks, recreation centers, child care and youth centers, BridgeDetroit reported. In July 2026, according to WDET, the council added places of worship to that list. The draft ordinance we read measured the distance in a straight line and treated a dispensary's own sign for what it sells as a separate category, so your storefront sign appears to fall outside the ban. I'd confirm that, and the adopted wording, before relying on it.

Michigan doesn't ban cannabis billboards statewide, which makes Detroit one of the places where the local layer decides. Our Michigan page covers the state rules. Before you sign for a billboard in the city, I'd map a 1,000-foot circle around it and check every school, park, library and church inside.

Medical Provisioning Centers and January 2027

The 2022 ordinance text says that from January 1, 2027, medical provisioning centers licensed before January 11, 2021 can apply for an adult-use retail license, and that those licenses sit outside the 100-store cap. The city's PDF doesn't show which clauses were later struck, so I couldn't confirm this is still in force or how many provisioning centers would qualify. If it is, more adult-use dispensaries could open in Detroit in 2027, and the map around yours could change. Worth watching, and worth having your listing in good shape before then.

Hazel Park, Ferndale and the Proposed Dispensary Cap

A state Senate bill introduced in October 2025 would allow one retail license per 10,000 residents, and the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee backed it 11 to 0. Metro Times ran the numbers for that bill: Detroit, with 645,705 people and 61 active dispensary licenses, would have a cap of 64; Hazel Park, with 10 dispensaries for 19,431 people, would get one; Ferndale, with six for 15,064, one. Existing stores would keep operating. A revised version was heard in June 2026, and I haven't found any vote since.

Those suburb numbers don't tell you where Detroiters shop, and I wouldn't read them that way. They do mean several licensed dispensaries sit just across 8 Mile, so I'd include a suburb search when checking where your listing lands.

State Enforcement Involving Detroit Licensees

The state's Cannabis Regulatory Agency recorded a "Packaging and Advertising" action against a Detroit licensee in its June 2026 disciplinary report, along with tracking and security issues. I haven't read the consent order, and the report itself doesn't describe the ad problem. In May 2024, Detroit police shut down a smoke shop on Warren Avenue for selling marijuana without a license, ClickOnDetroit reported. Both are good reasons to keep your state license number visible and your menu wording within Michigan's rules.

Our Case Studies Come From Outside Michigan

Michigan isn't represented in our published case studies, and Detroit isn't either. The tiles below track dispensaries in Texas and Ontario over their own periods, and none of them sets an expectation for a Detroit dispensary.

Detroit Dispensaries in AI Answers

Someone near Eastern Market asking an AI assistant for a dispensary might get an answer drawn from dispensary sites, Google listings and cannabis directories that may list Detroit, Hazel Park and Ferndale dispensaries side by side. We spell out your Detroit address, opening hours and services in plain text so those assistants can pick them up, fix the listings you run and send correction requests where someone else runs them. In Detroit I'd make the city name and neighborhood unmistakable on your site, since the dispensaries nearest you may be in another city.

The smallest Detroit plan is $2,000 a month. Paid advertising, more Metro Detroit locations or a site rebuild can bring the total to $10,000 or more. I go over your website, your city license, the dispensaries within a few blocks and what you want handled before naming a monthly figure. Google, Meta and other platforms bill ad spend to your own account, and a Detroit engagement wraps up 30 days after either of us gives notice. Canadian clients see CAD quotes, and our pricing page shows what each service starts at.

500 feet since the council's late-2023 change, as Metro Times reported, while the distance from schools, parks and churches stays 1,000 feet.

The 2022 ordinance text allows eligible ones to apply from January 1, 2027, outside the retail cap. I couldn't confirm that clause is still in force.
