NYC Dispensary Marketing
New York City Went From About 60 Licensed Dispensaries to More Than 300 in About Two Years
In August 2024, Bisnow counted about 60 licensed dispensaries in the five boroughs. Our count of the state's dispensary list on October 21, 2026 found 321. The state's own statewide total kept moving after that, from 744 that week to 757 on October 28.
With that many new licenses, the dispensary a few blocks from yours may not have existed a year ago. My work for NYC dispensaries, delivery services and cannabis brands is about being seen where people look first: the map, the search results and the answers AI tools give. ColaDigital works remotely and has no New York office.

Licensed Dispensaries by Borough
| Borough | Licensed dispensaries | Per 100,000 residents |
|---|---|---|
| Manhattan | 104 | 6.3 |
| Brooklyn | 94 | 3.6 |
| Queens | 84 | 3.6 |
| Bronx | 23 | 1.7 |
| Staten Island | 16 | 3.2 |
| All five boroughs | 321 | 3.8 |
Our ZIP code count of the state cannabis office's dispensary list on October 21, 2026; Queens is the five-borough total minus the other four. Some rows on the state's list have no address or a mismatched ZIP, so treat these as close counts. Per-resident rates are our arithmetic using Census Vintage 2024 estimates published by NYC Planning.
Residents aren't the only people buying, especially in Manhattan, so I wouldn't treat these rates as demand. They do show how unevenly licenses are spread: Manhattan has nearly four times as many dispensaries per resident as the Bronx. They can't show you which listings Google puts next to yours. To learn that, run the search from your own block and note who appears.
Several operators now run more than one NYC location. In a partial read of the state's list on October 28, one name had at least 8 city addresses, another 7 and another 5, by our count.
How Close a New Dispensary Can Open to Yours
State rules now keep new dispensaries 500 feet from the entrance of a school on the same street and 200 feet from a house of worship on the same street. That change took effect February 11, 2026, and dispensaries licensed before then keep their locations.
Spacing between dispensaries is less settled. A March 2025 draft rule from the Office of Cannabis Management set 500 feet as the minimum between retail dispensaries in cities NYC's size, with sites between 500 and 1,000 feet allowed only after a finding of "public convenience and advantage", and only once the existing dispensary has been open nine months. Manhattan Community Board 5's 2025 guidelines apply that process, but I haven't confirmed the final adopted wording. If you're planning a move or a second location, have your lawyer confirm the current rule for the address.
Any new arrival nearby can reshuffle the map around you, so it's worth tracking applications in your area.

The Community Board Step That Only Applies in NYC
In New York City, a dispensary applicant has to notify the local community board 30 to 270 days before filing with the state. The board's opinion goes into the state's record, and the state has to answer it in writing. Some boards ask for a lot: Brooklyn Community Board 4 asks for a five-block radius map of nearby schools, places of worship and dispensaries, a product list, a floor plan and building paperwork, and says an applicant who doesn't appear gets an unfavorable recommendation.
Two practical points come out of that. If you're opening, the weeks between the board hearing and opening day are a good time to get your Google listing, address and hours ready, so they're right from the first day. If you're already open, your community board's cannabis agenda is an early look at who may be applying nearby.
Unlicensed Shops and Operation Padlock to Protect
New York City started padlocking unlicensed cannabis shops in May 2024. Sealing orders last a year, and civil penalties run up to $10,000 a day per violation. Bisnow reported 779 shops sealed by August 2024 across Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, and CBS New York reported more than 1,631 ordered shut by December 2025. A Queens judge ruled the padlock law unconstitutional for one challenging shop in October 2024, and the city appealed; I haven't confirmed how the appeal ended, or the 2026 totals.
If you're licensed, help shoppers confirm it quickly: show your license details on your website, keep your Google listing's name and categories accurate and use photos of your actual storefront. Our New York page covers the state's verification QR code and the rest of the statewide rules.
Hours, Delivery and Where NYC Ads Can't Go
State rules stop sales from midnight until 8 a.m. unless the local government allows otherwise, and no citywide NYC hours law turned up in my research. Online orders can be taken after hours but filled only once you open. For delivery, the state's rules apply, and the current 2026 details aren't something I've confirmed, so I'd simply make sure your listing and site name the neighborhoods you actually serve.
New York's ad rules apply in the city exactly as they do statewide. The ban on transit and publicly owned property takes subway cars, buses and city property off the table, and the 500-foot buffer around schools and community facilities covers a lot of ground in a dense neighborhood. Those are our readings of the state rules for NYC, and our New York page lists each rule in full. We're marketers, not lawyers; check edge cases with your lawyer.
Published Results From Other Markets
None of ColaDigital's published case studies is from New York. These four results, from Dallas, Ontario and other Canadian dispensaries, each carry their dates and describe past work, not what your NYC dispensary will see.

Your NYC Dispensary in AI Answers
ChatGPT, Gemini and the AI answers in Google may pull from your website, Google profile and other published pages when someone asks about dispensaries in a neighborhood. With hundreds of new licenses and many unlicensed shops padlocked, stale details are easy to come by. Our job is a site those tools can parse cleanly, corrections wherever we have access and update requests to the platforms we don't run. Naming you is the AI tool's choice; giving it accurate facts is ours.

Fees for NYC Dispensaries (USD)
For an NYC dispensary, work costs at least $2,000 a month in USD. Several locations, paid media or a large site rebuild can take it beyond $10,000. Before putting a number on it, I'd go through your website, each location and the licensed dispensaries around it, and what you need help with. Spend on ads goes to the platforms directly. Either side can end the engagement on 30 days' notice. For a Canadian business, the quote comes in CAD. Each service's opening fee is on the pricing page.
NYC retainers: from $2,000 each month
Groups running paid media across several locations: $10,000+
Charged in US dollars; CAD for Canadian firms

Common Questions From NYC Dispensaries
How Many Licensed Dispensaries Are in New York City?+
We counted 321 in the five boroughs on the state's list for October 21, 2026, with 104 in Manhattan, 94 in Brooklyn, 84 in Queens, 23 in the Bronx and 16 on Staten Island.
How Close Can a New Dispensary Open to Mine?+
A 2025 draft state rule set 500 feet as the minimum, with sites between 500 and 1,000 feet allowed only after a public convenience finding. I haven't confirmed the final adopted wording, so confirm it before relying on it for an address.
Do I Have to Go Before My Community Board?+
Yes, if you're applying in NYC. You notify the board 30 to 270 days before filing, and its opinion becomes part of the state's record.
Can I Advertise on the Subway or on Buses?+
No. New York keeps cannabis advertising off public transit and property the government owns. Our New York page lists the other placement limits.
Can an NYC Dispensary Stay Open After Midnight?+
State rules bar sales from midnight to 8 a.m. unless the local government allows them, and I didn't find a city law that does.
How Can Shoppers Tell My Dispensary Is Licensed?+
Put your license details on your site, use the state's verification QR code at your door and keep your Google listing's name and photos true to your storefront.
Is ColaDigital Based in New York City?+
No. We work remotely, starting from your real addresses, the licensed dispensaries around them and your own numbers.
What Will SEO Cost My NYC Dispensary?+
From $2,000 monthly in USD; multi-location groups running paid media can exceed $10,000. The platforms send their own ad spend invoices, and 30 days' notice stops the work.
